Intake Form  (Those with a first appointment can print this form to save time prior to your first session)

I have been practicing at New Beginnings Counseling Center, Camarillo, California, since 1987, I spend a great deal of time working with children, pre-school through adolescence but I also work with adults in relationship counseling as well as a variety of individual concerns such as depression, anxiety and other relationship and workplace issues. I also work with those who have had physical, sexual, medical, and other forms of trauma.

I have authored of several peer-reviewed professional journal articles on the topics of child and adult trauma, and play therapy. My daughter, Tara Rio, and I authored the internationally distributed book, The Anorexia Diaries: Triumph of a Mother and Daughter Over Teenage Eating Disorders. (2003). This book is Available through  www.Amazon.com and most major bookstores.  Their book is sold throughout the U.S., England, South Africa, Australia and all of the United Kingtom, and was translated into Portugues for distribution in Brazil.

Pituitary and other Neuroendocrine Disorders (hormones) occur more commonly than prevously believed. Actually about 1 our of every 5 adults has been found to have a tumor on their pituitary gland.  The pituitary has been called the "master gland" and is part of the overall hormone system in the body.  Pituitary tumors most often are NOT cancerous but can cause many physical AND emotional problems. Some of the symptoms show as depresson, anxiety, infertility, sexual dysfunction (low sex drive, erectile difficulties etc.), headaches, menstrual irregularities, anger/rage, mood disorders, obesity and/or sudden and rapid weight gain, eating disorders and more.  I lecture and write on on this topic as it applies to mental health for patients and their families.  I am  on the Board of Directors for the Pituitary Network Association, PNA.,for a lot more information about this go to: www.pituitary.org
I am certified as an Approved Supervisor through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).  I provide supervision to those training to become supervisors (Supervision of Supervision) through this national organization, The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). www.aamft.org

Play therapy for children is done in a state-of-the-art therapeutic playroom, which employs the use of art, sandtray, puppets, therapeutic games, and other play materials. Parents and caretakers are seen as key components to their children's healing.
Adults, teens, as well as children can benefit from EMDR for certain areas of difficulty and skill enhancement.   EMDR (Eye Movement Desentization and Reprocessing) is a technique used to assist in healing a variety of issues including trauma from physical, emotional, sexual, medical or other situations.  This can also be employed as a tool in enhancing skills and positive resources that exist in us all but may not be easily accessible or identifiable at times.

 Philosophy of Therapy:

I use an integrated systemic approach to therapy. This makes use of a variety of therapeutic modalities including cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, brief, and other methods depending upon the needs of the individual client, but within the perspective of the family system. In this role I work with family physicians, nurses, teachers and others who may be necessary as part of a good treatment team. Of course, I always discuss with clients any recommendations I may have for consultations with other professionals and obtain written permission prior to discussing any case.  I believe it is important to see the mind and the body as very much connected so it is important to assess the whole person/family's needs in order to provide the most up-to-date and very best car.
"It is important to see each person as unique and tailor their treatment to their own special needs. Developing a special, safe and caring environment is especially important. I try to act more as a coach rather than an expert; helping to guide each person, each family down whatever path they are on. Helping people have more rewarding relationships is an important goal of therapy."

I am in private practice in Ventura County, California.  New Beginnings Counseling Center is centrally located in Camarllo, CA.  New Beginnings Counseling Center is a group of independent psychotherapists who belive in providing the best professional services to their clients.

I feel it is important for any professional to belong to significant organizations specific to their profession so I am a member of several organizations I feel are important to my professional skill development as well as the profession as a whole.  These include:

The Association for Play Therapy and EMDRIA, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association are groups I belong to.  I also meet and belong to the Conejo Valley Mental Health Professionals Association (CVMHPA). This is a group of Ventura professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, psychiatric hospital administrators, mediators ...and many more professionals who belong in order to better know about services in Ventura and surrounding counties so we may all serve our clients best.
I received my master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Alliant University (formerly United States International University) in San Diego, California.

In addition to being in private practice for over 20 years, I have taught in the graduate school of Psychology at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, California.

I hold leadership positions within the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT), currently  as president (2008-2010) of the California Divison of AAMFT.

I was honored by the Ventura Chapter of CAMFT in 1995 to receive their "Outstanding Chapter Leader of the Year" award.  In 2004 I was again honored, this time by the state CAMFT association, with the prestigious Clark Vincent Award, for Outstanding Literary Contribution for co-authorship of, The Anorexa Diaries.
